EARLY EDUCATION & OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME

SUMMER
STEP UP

SUPPORTING STUDENTS THROUGH SUMMER

The Summer Step Up Program (SSUP) is a partnership between the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care and United Way of Massachusetts Bay. Beginning as a program in 2021 to introduce or reintroduce children to in-person learning following a year of largely virtual classrooms and isolation, this program has expanded to include school readiness through social emotional learning, academic learning, and exposure to structured play and learning experiences. The Summer Step Up Program provides funding and technical assistance to school districts and community partners to carry out and create summer learning for Pre-K through 3rd grade students and encourages school district and community partner collaboration.

SUMMER STEP UP BY THE NUMBERS

SINCE 2021

We have helped create, extend, or enhance in-person summer experiences for young children

Using various models, we support around 30 school districts to provide summer learning services that prepare young learners for school entry in the fall.

Together we’ve invested in infrastructure to support innovative community collaborations and improve coordination along with around 55 community partners

Over the three years of the program 6134 students have been prepared to transition into early childhood special education, pre-k, kindergarten, first grade, second and third grade.

United Way partners around the region are working with us: Berkshire, Northern Berkshire, Central Mass, North Central MA, Pioneer Valley, Franklin and Hampshire Region, South Central MA and Tri County
