Women’s Leadership Council throws Community Baby Shower for 100 moms

For many expecting mothers, having a baby is an exciting time to celebrate; but for those who do not have the resources and support needed, it can be an overwhelming experience.

Four years ago, volunteers from United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council established the Community Baby Shower, an event that supports expecting mothers by providing them with resources as well as the companionship and advice that is so important during this time.

In the spirit of a traditional baby shower, the event connects pregnant women and new parents with each other while offering educational presentations such as infant massage techniques, resource tables from Thrive in 5 and the City of Boston Credit Union, a pediatrician on hand to help answer questions, baby items donated by local families, plus dinner, games and prizes.

I participated in the Community Baby Shower last year while pregnant and I received so much for my baby.  This event helps so many moms and has great resources to help us in the future with our bundle of joy. I came back this year to help, explore, and to give back to my community. It’s such a blessing to see all the new and old faces. I can’t wait to volunteer again next year!  – Sophia Michel, a mother of three from Dorchester.

Now in its 4th year, this was our largest Community Baby Shower to date, with 100 local families and 35 volunteers. United Way corporate partners, volunteers, and individuals participated by donating and assembling the baby gift baskets and holding “baby basics” drives, in addition to volunteering at the event.  Sponsors include: Boston Financial Data Services, Sun Life Financial, Deloitte, John Hancock, and BJs Wholesale Club.
