As the holiday season approaches, the air is filled with anticipation and excitement. Beyond the glittering lights and festive decorations, it's the spirit of giving and gratitude that truly defines this special time of year. One remarkable initiative that kicks off the holiday season is The Gratitude Project by United Way, which has found a steadfast ally in UPS, one of its long-standing corporate partners.

Originally starting as the Thanksgiving Project, United Way of Massachusetts Bay has consistently supported families throughout the region by providing essential food resources during the holiday season. This year, United Way evolved it into the Gratitude Project, transforming it into a celebration of cultural diversity that recognizes the need for support transcends seasonal boundaries and persists year-round.

In this heartwarming collaboration, UPS and its dedicated team of “Doers” joined forces during the Gratitude Project to make a significant impact in the communities they serve.

UPS, a global logistics and package delivery giant, is not only known for efficiently delivering packages to doorsteps but also for delivering smiles and hope. As part of their commitment to corporate social responsibility, UPS extended a helping hand to join forces with United Way in lessening the burden of food insecurity this holiday season for those in need.

Kicking Off the Holiday Season with UPS's Heartfelt Giving

For nearly a quarter of a century, UPS has actively participated in this heartwarming project, leaving a lasting impact on the Greater Boston area and beyond. The testimonials from UPS staff members highlight the profound effect this partnership has on both the volunteers and the families they assist. All of them share how the Gratitude Project has become a cherished tradition for UPS employees.

John DiNatale, the Division Manager for the Northeast New England area, has been involved with the project for 5 years. “Over the years, many drivers, supervisors, and hourly employees have dedicated time to volunteering for this project. It is near and dear to our heart," said DiNatale. The deep connection between UPS and the United Way reflects the company's commitment to community engagement and making a positive difference where it matters most.

Kevin Russo, Transportation Manager for the Boston area, shares reflections on his 15 years of involvement in The Gratitude Project. In the initial five years, he was a dedicated driver, loading nearly 2000 bags of food and delivering them to a church in Dorchester. Over time, Kevin transitioned into a pivotal role in the project's logistics, overseeing operations spanning from Lowell, Lawrence, Lynn, to Dorchester and South Boston.

“My role has significantly expanded from being a simple driver driving and delivering to Dorchester to coordinating the entire operation to make sure every site gets their delivery in a timely manner and with all the bags intact,” he said, illustrating how his journey mirrors the evolution and growth of the project. "Being able to give back as UPS to the communities where we work and live is a great responsibility for all of us. This year, we're feeding close to 16,000 families through this food drive, and it's a very rewarding and gratifying experience."

Having spent 11 years at UPS, Jeffrey Henriquez was familiar with the Gratitude Project by hearing from other drivers who typically volunteered due to the limited number of available slots. This year marked Jeffrey’s inaugural participation in the Gratitude Project. While he finds satisfaction in the general aspects of his job at UPS, what holds particular significance for him is the opportunity to bring smiles to people's faces. Moreover, Jeffrey emphasizes this project is more than a duty; it's a meaningful way to make a positive impact by delivering essential items to neighborhoods, extending beyond the routine delivery of packages. "We are feeding the neighborhoods; this is more important than just delivering whatever they order online," said Henriquez.

Ten years ago, Calvin Harris Junior embarked on his journey with The Gratitude Project as a driver. His progression within UPS is reflected in his evolving roles, transitioning from delivering packages to coordinating operations, and ultimately serving as a supervisor. For Calvin, the project is not just fulfilling but a source of internal joy. “It makes you feel good inside,” said Harris.

Calvin believes that the Gratitude Project is a meaningful way to give back to the community. "Whenever anyone sees a UPS driver anytime of the year, they're appreciative of us. So, I think this is a good way to give back," says Calvin.

As UPS staff members like John, Kevin, Jeffrey, and Calvin rallied together for The Gratitude Project, they embody the true spirit of the holiday season—unity, generosity, and gratitude.
