#GivingTuesday: How Your Support Helps Make a Difference

UPDATE!  Our Giving Tuesday Fundraiser brought in more than $20,000 from 69 generous donors.  With the matching funds from Women United, we’ll have more than $40k to use toward feeding families this winter!

#GivingTuesday isn’t just a day on the calendar: It’s a worldwide movement that unites our desire to give. It’s a day when people come together and make positive, lasting change.

As November’s bitter air settled in New England last year, Boston’s Bridge Over Troubled Waters faced an unexpected and unfortunate situation. The non-profit organization that provides services for homeless youth lost heat.

During the winter months, the Bridge opens a warming center to provide warmth and safety to youth who need overnight shelter. But with a broken heating system and lack of sufficient funds to fix the problem immediately, there would be no heat available for those who needed it.

The Bridge turned to United Way of Mass Bay for help. Fortunately, it was the day after #GivingTuesday – a day to pay-it-forward and give back to the community. From the funds raised just the previous day, we were able to give the Bridge $10,000 to repair the heating system just in time for one of the coldest months of the year.

The Power of #GivingTuesday

Every year, we’re able to help partner agencies like the Bridge Over Troubled Waters because of the donations we receive on #GivingTuesday. Last year we were also able to provide:

  • 138,385 individuals with food support services
  • 30,314 households with financial assistance and emergency need support

And this year, we expect to exceed the amount we raised last year. With an incredible $20,000 match from Women United, our goal of $40,000 is now in reach!

All donations to United Way on #GivingTuesday will go to the Family Fund, which directly helps the people who live in our communities. Whether it’s helping feed low-income families in our communities or providing emergency assistance—our goal is to set up individuals and families for future stability and success.
