Position Overview:

The Director of Development will act as an integral part of a team that spends the majority of his/her time in the field interfacing with stakeholders and prospects to achieve the development goals of United Way, with a focus on the Merrimack Valley and regions outside Greater Boston. The director will manage a portfolio of workplace accounts to strengthen relationships and deepen engagement to raise more revenue, recruit more volunteers and develop community partnerships to achieve organization goals. The Director will serve as lead staff to two regional boards, the Merrimack Valley Advisory Board and one additional Board, supporting the Chair and members in developing and executing annual work plans for the scope of responsibility defined by the Regional Advisory Board Charter. The Director will have lead responsibility for raising revenue for SEGL (Summer Experiences in Greater Lowell) and working with the VP of Engagement to support event committee volunteers in achieving annual goals. This outward-facing role will require the candidate to be a leader who has demonstrated the ability to build strong, mutually beneficial relationships.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage Key Corporate Accounts and Corresponding Individual Relationships.
Direct responsibility for building strong, mutually beneficial relationships with key corporate partners and individuals to increase revenue and retain donors. Includes analyzing donor and account giving patterns in order to plan, execute and support assigned workplace campaigns using best practices; building relationships with key account influencers and inspiring them to try new approaches to retaining donors and acquiring donors; tracking results and making accurate projections; maintaining accurate donor records; and providing appropriate recognition to key volunteer and donors. Ensure a high level of response to volunteer needs and requests, diagnosing and solving problems as needed. Must work effectively with other functions at United Way to be able to provide appropriate support and value to partners.

Provide staff leadership to the Merrimack Valley Advisory Board and one other regional board to achieve their annual goals in a scope of work defined by the Regional Board Charter.
Collaborate with the Board Chair, subcommittee Chairs and appropriate staff to create and execute an annual work plan that sets and achieves goals for development, community impact, marketing/community awareness, and community engagement. Work with Board chair on governance including recruitment and onboarding of new members, develop meeting agendas, and collaborating with internal colleagues to bring resources needed to the group. Provide members support and information needed to conduct influencer calls, steward donors, serve as community ambassadors and open doors to new prospects. Provide ongoing opportunities for members to deepen their understanding of United Way’s work in the region. Work with AVP of Development/Regions to staff joint meetings of the regional boards, support regional marketing committee, and develop region-wide board strategies.

Lead the fundraising efforts for SEGL (Summer Experiences in Greater Lowell)
Cultivate and grow existing donors, identify new prospects, work with internal and external constituents to tell a compelling story designed to inspire support of the program. Support the success of the annual Lantheus golf tournament and steward the relationship. Participate in the planning and execution of the Spring Fling event and work with the AVP of Community Engagement to support event committee volunteers in achieving annual goals.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 4+ years of related development experience.
  • Experience in staffing a volunteer board or committee or managing volunteers in
    executing major events or projects.
  • Strong customer relationship and customer service skills including the ability to tie
    United Way benefits to partner needs.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team and to build strong internal
    alliances across functional areas.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated project and process management skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in a Microsoft Office environment.
  • Experience using database systems.
  • Willingness to accommodate requests for support outside of regular business hours on occasion, with appropriate notice.
