Year in Impact: United Way and American Red Cross Mobile Food Market
United Way teamed up throughout the year with American Red Cross, offering mobile food market assistance to reach so-called “food deserts,” communities where low-income families have limited access to nutritious emergency groceries. The Food and Nutrition Mobile Market provides nutritious food assistance, nutritional counseling and food stamp benefits assistance once per month, and emergency groceries up to once a week in targeted communities. Last year, the mobile market provided 20,000 bags of food and had over 5,700 visits from local families. Communities served by the mobile program include Lynn, Chelsea, East Boston, and Revere.
