United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley Appoints Bob Giannino as Next President and CEO

Dear United Way of Mass Bay Community,

On behalf of the Board of Directors of United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley, I am pleased to share that we have unanimously approved the appointment of Bob Giannino to serve as our next President and Chief Executive Officer. Bob will begin serving as President and CEO on August 1, following the retirement of current CEO Michael K. Durkin in July after 43 years with United Way.

Bob is currently the Chief Executive Officer of uAspire. In addition to the vast experience he’ll bring to our work to ensure young people succeed, Bob also brings a diversity of thought, new perspective, and access to new networks and potential partnerships to our organization. Bob’s successful track record includes building deep corporate partnerships and partnerships with national foundations.

Not only is he a national expert on college access and affordability for youth from underserved communities, throughout the search process Bob was consistently praised by colleagues and other stakeholders for his exceptional leadership capabilities, visionary, yet “sleeves up” approach, and as a champion for diversity, equity and inclusion.

These issues are deeply interconnected to United Way’s focus of bringing together the right partners and resources to address income inequality, intergenerational poverty and homelessness, the skills gap facing STEM and other industries, and the need to lay a solid foundation for young children through high-quality early education and to prepare youth for success in college and career.

A product of Somerville Public Schools, the first in his family to attend college, and a graduate of Harvard College, Bob knows well the critical importance of financial opportunity and educational success as the foundation for a better life.

Finally, I would like to extend my deep thanks and appreciation to United Way Board members Jan Cooper, Tim Connelly and the entire Search Committee. I can’t say enough about this great group of dedicated leaders in our community who were equally dedicated to finding an outstanding new leader for our organization.
